Ever feel like life is moving at warp speed, and you’re just trying to keep up? I get it. Between work, family, errands, and all the random stuff that pops up, it’s easy to feel overwhelmed. Over the past few years, I’ve learned something that has completely changed my day-to-day: automation and routines.
If you’re juggling a busy schedule or managing a business like a group home, these strategies can truly be a lifesaver. Let me walk you through how I’ve made automation work for me — and how you can do the same.
Direct Deposit: An Oldie But a Goodie
Let’s start with one of the simplest automation tools out there: direct deposit. Every bit of my income hits my bank account automatically — no need to pick up a check or worry about missing a payment. Even my group home rents are deposited straight into my business account each month. That means no running to the bank, no delays, and no stress. It’s a classic for a reason!
Autopay Bills (and the Profit First System)
Next up is autopay. I have all my utility bills and recurring expenses tied to my business operating account, and they’re automatically paid on time. This means I never have to chase due dates or worry about a missed payment fee.
From there, I use the Profit First method — another smart routine that has transformed my business finances. At the end of each month, I transfer money from my operating account into a holding account, so I always have reserves. This helps me stick to a spending plan while building a healthy profit cushion. I’m actually planning to do a video on Profit First for group homes soon, so stay tuned!
Automating Personal Savings
On the personal side, I have automatic transfers set up from my checking to my savings account every payday. It happens without me having to think about it, and the best part? It adds up. This is one of the simplest ways to build savings over time — even small amounts grow if you make it automatic.
Grocery Delivery and Subscriptions
Grocery shopping used to be a major time drain, but now I automate that too. Instacart deliveries make sure my pantry stays stocked even when I don’t have time to shop.
I also subscribe for essentials like coffee, pet food, and toiletries. It’s so satisfying to never run out of toilet paper again — thank you, subscriptions! One less thing to remember on my already overloaded to-do list.
Routine Planning
Another huge time-saver? Planning my routine. Every Sunday, I lay out my clothes for the week, gym outfits included. I also program my coffee maker to start brewing before I even roll out of bed. These small routines make mornings feel so much smoother and eliminate decision fatigue.
And, bonus tip: if you really want to go next-level, consider outsourcing. I’m looking into a cleaning service for a monthly deep clean. I still love doing dishes while listening to audiobooks — it’s almost therapeutic — but scrubbing baseboards? Not so much.
Why Automate?
When you automate or create consistent routines, you get back your most valuable resource: time. That mental load you carry — the dozens of little decisions and reminders every day — gets lighter. You free up headspace for what matters most, whether that’s growing your business, spending time with loved ones, or simply relaxing.
If you haven’t tried automating your life yet, start small. Pick just one thing — maybe autopay a bill or schedule your morning coffee — and build from there. You’ll be amazed at how much smoother your days can run.
