Setting Goals the Right Way

Updated: Mar 21, 2025

Have you ever noticed how most people set their annual goals in January, but then… nothing happens? It’s like those goals go into hibernation until October rolls around. Suddenly, there’s a scramble to achieve something before the year ends. Sound familiar?

Here’s the thing: when people finally start working on their goals in October, they realize they can knock out a few wins in just 90 days. Imagine what could happen if you started earlier and worked with that same focus all year long.

For me, the key is being realistic about my time. We all get the same 24 hours in a day, and I’ve learned that how I use those hours makes all the difference. I don’t rely on wishful thinking—I make a plan. Every night before bed, I write down my top three tasks for the next day. These aren’t just any tasks; they’re the ones that will have the biggest impact. By focusing on three hard-hitting priorities each day, I’m able to accomplish 15 meaningful things every single work week. That’s a lot of progress!

Here’s my secret sauce: I work backwards. I start with the end goal in mind and figure out the steps needed to get there. It’s all about breaking big goals into smaller, actionable steps that I can tackle one by one.

The process is simple:

1. Decide what you want. What’s the big dream? Be specific.

2. Write it down. There’s power in putting pen to paper (or thumbs to phone). Make it real.

3. Visualize it daily. I keep a note on my phone with my goals and look at it every day. That daily reminder keeps me focused and on track.

4. Make a list and work it to completion. Break your goal into smaller steps, and then work through them systematically. Check those steps off, one by one.

You’ve got everything you need to achieve your goals. You’re intelligent, capable, and resourceful. Dream it, plan it, and make it happen.
